Using procedure-specific consent forms for total hip replacement, patients improved their recall of benefits associated with the surgery, according to a study in the Journal of Patient Safety.

Of patients surveyed four weeks after surgery, nearly 50% recalled the potential benefits of surgery better than they recalled the risks, and 90% reported being happy with the information they had received, the study noted.

Informed consent is an important step in the operative process, and surgeons have an obligation to provide information to patients that fosters shared decision-making.
